My name is Scott, a proud gay U.S. Navy veteran now living in Minnesota, though my story began in Michigan. At 15, I discovered my adoption papers by accident but never questioned my mother—until years later, when I returned home to help her during a difficult time. That’s when she revealed she’d put me up for adoption because she “had to think about it.” Her words, and the ease with which she said them, stung deeply.
When I asked about my father, a man I’d never met, she admitted he had wanted to be involved but she didn’t want that. On top of these painful truths, I also endured rejection from my family for being gay, which left me feeling unworthy and alone for much of my life.
But I’ve come to understand that while our past shapes us, it doesn’t define us. I choose to live openly and honestly, sharing my story not for sympathy, but to connect—because I know I’m not the only one who’s walked this path.
